Artist Statement
The art of repairing broken pottery is both an emotional and physical journey for me. Each golden line on white porcelain represents the path to healing old scars and turning mistakes into something beautiful. The voyage from regret to peace is a long one; each painstaking step of this project shows that. With my art, I want to show that no matter how long or hard your trials may be, it is always possible to reach the end. I am my greatest inspiration.
The other half of my project involves the art of world creating and storytelling. I have created a story in my mind that I want to share with the rest of the world: a story that involves beauty, loss, sorrow, struggles, and love in a pale, fantastical reflection of my own.
Sylvie Bowman was born in Maryland, 2003, but considers herself to be from Tennessee. When it comes to her art, she enjoys playing into both parts of her heritage: Filipino-Chinese and Southern white. Her art mainly revolves around the colorful worlds and galaxies in her brain and in her writing: demons, monsters, gods, and humans all appear from her mind to the paper. She is not currently pursuing art in any professional manner, merely for the pure enjoyment of creating.
