About The Artist

Artist bio:
Sofia Jihye Louca Lee always had a strong passion for art, ever since she was a child. She has been greatly influenced by her cultural roots being of Cypriot and Korean descent, so from a very young age she was exposed to many diverse art forms. Her work has ranged all different mediums, from painting to pencil, however she has been particularly focused in charcoal as of recent. Her collection of detailed charcoal animals continues to grow, and she displays an increasing mastery in showing light, depth, and shadows in her work.
Artist Statement:
Expressing my thoughts and whims into strokes of paint has always been a go to “let go” mechanism for myself. Art is a useful tool in expressing one’s emotions, and on top of that, it’s a pleasant recreational activity that from youth to now I have grown more serious about. I have always had a distinct fascination in animals, in particular tigers and horses for their defined features. The muscles and the beauty of these wild creatures is a challenge to depict to my very high standard of perfectionism, however I do enjoy a little pushing. The flow of the muscles and the body in movement is difficult to capture but intensely fascinating, and I have made very steady improvement. From a very young age, I was absolutely obsessed with all the critters and crawlers of this world and knew all about animals and their different skeletal structure. I combined previous knowledge of animal anatomy and mannerisms with this new medium I was introduced to (charcoal), and it gave me the opportunity for quicker art and a new appreciation for shading. I also delved in to gauche and water color–an old favorite–and jewelry as well, which has been a passion of mine for quite some time.
