Hey! Below is a complete draft of my timeline of 418 E’s history. Each line includes an in-text citation linking back to a source, the vast majority of which have been included in prior source sessions. One in-text citation——”(large old book??)”——refers to a massive book I found at the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society. It is very old and difficult to read, and any cover or publisher page has disappeared. I will return to the Society in the coming month to try and get a better citation, and will update the timeline accordingly. I believe it to be one of the city’s oldest Deed Books, which include records of sale, legal disputes in the County Court, and inheritance policies.
1803—John Kelly purchases the future 418 E. property from Hudson Martin (Woods, 1901)
Pre-1826—418 E. is occupied by a “large wood building stood, which was removed to the lower end of the lot opposite to the old Stone Tavern” (Alexander, 1828-1874)
1826—John Kelly builds a store house at 418 E. Jefferson St. The building is first occupied by Col. Watson and Mr. Cochran (Alexander, 1828-1874)
