Hinke Younger — Senior Thesis 2023
The majority of my sources for this class will be documents, permits, and eye-witness accounts rather than books or other “traditional academic” sources. For this reason, each post that I upload to this WordPress page will include multiple sources of all kinds and what I have gleaned from them, in addition to timelines, photographs, and citations.
SOURCE SESSION #3: RHS ARTICLES & ADDITIONAL SOURCES.
Featured Image: “Landscaping the Community”. Photo by Robbins, Melody (2017).
Source: “School receives $182,000 donation”. The Daily Progress: Andrews, Kate (2000).
The first of six articles I picked up at the Historical Society about Renaissance. Notes:
- The school will use $150,000 for scholarship between 2000-2003. $32,000 will go for science and math technology.
- Pati Cunningham served as the first head of school
- In 2000, 20% of RHS students received scholarship help with $7,500-a-year tuition
- Since its inception, the school has pledged not to get larger than 60 students
- Quote: “In about a month, the school’s web site, renaissanceschool.org, will feature film clips, music and other bells and whistles.”
Source: “Renaissance student redefines morning commute”. The Daily Progress: McKenzie, Bryan (2008).
Published in May of 2008. This longer article can be found in print in the school building, but the most important points are listed below.
- Linnea Saby, a student at RS, is “taking her bike to the road to bring attention to bicycles as commuter vehicles.”
- The article mostly details Saby, with little emphasis on or further mention of the school.
Source: “Renaissance School to present student films”. The Daily Progress: Andrews, Kate (2002).
Published in August of 2002. Notes:
- Some examples of student films: “a teenage girl kissing two boys in quick succession, a boy juggling in a graveyard and a horse rolling in the dust”.
- The Make You Own Film Festival took place the Friday after the article was published (a Tuesday).
- At the time the school offered a videography class, which all students had to take.
- There were singing valentines in 2001…
- Quote: “The first Make Your Own Film Festival is set to take place noon-5 pm Friday at Renaissance School, 406 E. Main St.”
- I’m learning about lots of traditions we could bring back…
Source: “Renaissance School students use talents to mark the 20th anniversary of ByPass”. The Daily Progress: Staff Reports (2009).
Published in October of 2009. It has no author, and is only listed as “from staff reports”.
- RS partnered with the Miki Liszt dance Company to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a show called “ByPass”, which was Virginia’s first “large-scale multimedia dance”.
- Evidently, Liszt (director of Miki Liszt) also served as executive director of RS for some time.
- The article details the event, which was organized around the RS motto: “Take the road less traveled. Discover Renaissance School.” There were students dressed as cars and toll booths.
Source: “Meadow making takes root in Charlottesville”. Charlottesville Tomorrow: Dodson, Tim (2016).
I accessed this article digitally, only because it mentioned a former faculty member: John Hermsmeier.

Source: “Local private school graduates first class”. The Daily Progress: Pinto, Claudia (2002).
Published in June of 2002. Notes:
- School was founded in 1999 by Nancy Knorr (and a co-founder I have yet to identify).
- At the time, the building was still located on East Main Street.
- The ceremony was held at Knorr’s home; Emily Gray, Genevieve Munn, and more graduated.
- Alum Anne Vetter entered the U.S. Navy.
- Quote: Pati Cunningham: “You are the first graduating class, pioneers who paved the way. With your record of accomplishments and your reputations, you’ve made a school that is finer than anything we could have imagined.”
Additional Sources:
In an effort to at least keep some pictures a surprise, I have not included several images. However, I have cited them below:

Future Plans:
Source session #4 will focus on my summer interview with Sterling Howell.
Source session #5 will list all of the sources I gathered at the Charlottesville City Assessor’s Office (an additional 15-20 sources).
Source session #6 will contain everything I find at the UVa Special Collections library next Thursday, as well as any final sources to round out the summer. I may also include an additional session in late August featuring the completed, cited, property timeline and/or a complete bibliography.
Thank you!
