Portraiture

What you see here is a result of a months-long effort to explore my relationship with art through the lens of portraiture. By focusing on one medium and one kind of subject, I sought to improve my understanding of technical aspects like shadow and facial structures, experiment with my personal style, and evolve my mindset. Over the last several months, I witnessed myself growing faster at my artistic process, more comfortable with my materials and subjects, and less attached to the appearance of my finished pieces. I worked to let go of my perfectionist tendencies, and I have come to love the rough edges, rawness, and imperfections of my work.

One more work-in-progress to come…

BIOGRAPHY

Maya P has lived in central Virginia her whole life, doing as many different kinds of art as possible the whole time. Although her first love will always be creative writing, she also favors singing, drums, ballet, and paint. A recovering perfectionist, Maya has been practicing doing things with abandon, with excellent results– she has discovered that life is much more enjoyable when you dye your hair purple, put on lots of sparkly eyeliner, and go on spontaneous car rides by yourself. Maya keeps her art a stress-free zone and tries her best to stay present while making art, as she finds that the end product is often more beautiful and always more rewarding if her main goal is to enjoy the process. Maya can usually be found in her room recharging with loud music and plenty of tea.
