What is a Cautionary Tale? (Twinkl.com)

Square

“A cautionary tale is a genre of story that is told to warn the audience of a specific danger. Cautionary tales are written to teach a lesson or a general moral issue, normally to young children.”

“Cautionary tales are quite rigid in their narrative structure, usually consisting of three parts:

  1. A thing, place or act is said to be dangerous.
  2. The central character then goes on to disregard the warning.
  3. The person who ignored the warning faces negative consequences for their actions.

There’s no set length to a cautionary tale but, more often than not, you’ll see this same structure across the genre” (unknown, n.d.).
