“A cautionary tale is a genre of story that is told to warn the audience of a specific danger. Cautionary tales are written to teach a lesson or a general moral issue, normally to young children.”
“Cautionary tales are quite rigid in their narrative structure, usually consisting of three parts:
- A thing, place or act is said to be dangerous.
- The central character then goes on to disregard the warning.
- The person who ignored the warning faces negative consequences for their actions.
There’s no set length to a cautionary tale but, more often than not, you’ll see this same structure across the genre” (unknown, n.d.).
